Pilates Yoga Mat
One of the most common questions we are asked when it comes to equipment is the difference between a pilates mat and a yoga mat. Because both activities will ask for one that is specifically related to the task at hand, it can seem confusing when you are shopping for the right one. This is especially problematic for those of us who would like to be able to switch off between the two.
This is what we like to call the Pilates Yoga Mat Conundrum, and it has a very simple answer. The truth is, there are very few differences between the two. They tend to be made of the same materials, and can be interchangeable between the two activities, as long as you find the right brand. But that doesn’t mean they are exactly the same.
You will find that the mat is thicker with one designed for pilates; yoga mat types are usually thinner, and made to stick to the ground they are placed on. They are made this way because there is a more aggressive movement to pilates, which will push you harder into the floor.
With yoga, you will need to focus on staying in place, and so will put the pressure into a single area at any given time. The mat has to be made to take this pressure, and to keep from sliding forward or back, which can cause injury.
With multi-purpose mats, they will usually be made of a thickness between the two averages, and with a rubber bottom to hug both hard and carpeted floors. If you are looking to go to both pilates and yoga, it might be best to find one of these to fit your purposes. But if you are just participating in one or the other, stick with the more specific rug type. It will help you to avoid any mistakes.
